The goal of the Boule Scholars Club is to encourage critical thinking, instill confidence, and empower young black men to accomplish their academic and personal goals. Our program is structured around a set of fundamental life skills that are proven to facilitate success. We aim to supplement the students academic experience with the exploration of a wide array of professional career paths and provide models that they may see themselves capable of becoming leaders both in their communities and professional lives. We expect and reward Academic Excellence!
Under the leadership of Archon Edwin Turner and Dr. Sherman Beverly, the Delta Alpha Boule Mentoring Program was established shortly after the inauguration of Delta Alpha Boule in 1990. Their stated goal was to coach and encourage young men within the Northern Lake County area to pursue academic excellence.
As a highly regarded educator and Professor of Education Administration at Northeastern Illinois University, Dr. Beverly, went on to publish several articles about his experience as a mentor and the importance of mentoring our young men. Archon Turner, himself a noted educator and coach, was the first Athletic Director at Roosevelt University. In his retirement, he viewed mentoring as an important extension of his life’s work. To ensure continuation of that work, Archon Turner’s estate provided the seed money for what is now the Delta Alpha Edwin Turner Scholarship Foundation. In alignment with the ideals and goals of Sigma Phi Pi’s Grand Boule Scholars Program, the foundation funds rewards, and scholarships for middle and high school student participants of the Boule Scholars Club who demonstrate academic excellence.
In 2014 the Boule Scholars Program turned its primary focus to mentoring students within the Evanston, Illinois school system. The initial success of the program generated acknowledgements and requests from all over the city to expand the reach of the program to include more students and more schools. The program answered the call and expanded to include two middle schools, Evanston Township High School, and students who matriculated through the program that have gone on to college.
The Boule Scholars Club (Program) like so many other programs, people and businesses around the world was not spared the negative impact of COVID-19. Although some things have changed, the commitment to our young men has not. The program mentors are an adaptable group of men passionately driven to bring the program back to pre-COVID levels of student participation and activities engagement. Strong evidence suggest that young men are more in need of mentoring support today than ever before.
Boule Scholars Club was founded in 2010. Since that time a number of young men have demonstrated academic excellence and become Boule Scholars.
Boule Scholars Club high school program began in 2015 to extend support to young men in pursuit of academic excellence and advanced education. In addition to adding a few more tools to the students toolbox, we support exploring the process of preparing for advanced learning.
